A Special Dog Like Yours
Lying quietly by my gate in the sweltering summer heat of the Texas Gulf Coast, I noticed a yellow Lab who I had never seen before…
She held her vigil at the gate for the entire summer.
When she made eye contact, which was not often, her eyes were cast downward reflecting her fear of making human contact.
She seemed to be retreating inside herself to a safer world.
We could leave food for her, but she tucked her tail and nervously bolted for the woods every time we approached.
Neighbors and local rescue organizations tried unsuccessfully to locate her owners.
To make matters worse, a local Animal Control officer came to notify me that he needed to trap her. She had been on the road and in the woods for six months and was considered a stray.
The news that he shared was heart-wrenching.
A dog like her, who has not been adequately socialized with humans, won’t likely make it to the shelter.
No one wants a dog that they cannot touch or play with.
The officer, whose arms and hands showed the scars of trapping, capturing, and trying to save abandoned dogs, said with regret that trapping and euthanizing her was for her own good and the good of the other local dogs.
She should not be left to starve, contract rabies or have litters of unwanted puppies.
Great points, except she was a living being who had fallen on hard times.
I tried to hold Animal Control at bay while my neighbors attempted to add her to their family of dogs.
But after six months, she was still terrified of everyone.
Then something totally unexpected happened.
My family hired, Myra Logan, a renowned animal communicator to talk to the dog and get her to see how much we wanted to help her.
Animal communication is exactly the kind of tool that I reach for when working with difficult and challenged animals.
For over two decades, I’ve felt like a magnet for animals who are in trouble: like a racehorse dealing with drug withdrawal, a feral cat who was badly injured, and a gorgeous little dog who was bitten by a snake causing severe neurological damage.
I began to share with other people the incredible tools I found and a new world opened up for me of healing, through natural and more subtle techniques and modalities.
But even with the vast amount of experience I’ve cultivated with holistic healing and ways of relating to animals through vehicles like animal communication, I was not prepared for this human/canine conversation.
As the dog cowered and quivered like a leaf trembling in an autumn wind, she slowly began to trust Myra, who was tossing doggie treats towards her.
Myra told us that the dog shared that at her past home, she was used for breeding.
The male dogs were vicious and aggressive.
This defenseless female knew that she was no match for the newest stud dog
She was sure that he was going to kill her.
So she ran away.
That’s how this frightened dog ended up on our road.
Very matter-of-factly, Katie explained why she could not live with my neighbors.
She said that had come for me. No further explanation.
My mind stopped cold. I could not believe what I was hearing because I had been deliberatley avoiding getting attached to her gentle disposition and her lovely, sweet eyes.
I immediately felt the truth of what this dog was saying but I didn’t have a clue yet about exactly how I could help her or why she was saying she had come for me.
Working with the process of breaking her shell of defense, built over many years, was going to take time.
Fast forward to today … She is sleeping peacefully on a pad in my house and she just raised her head as though she knows I am writing this message to you. Her name is Katie.
Katie has learned to smile.
Yes, she often averts her eyes when someone approaches her.
Yes, she is not a “normal” dog by most people’s standards.
But she is spayed, loved and growing in confidence.
I realized that what Katie told the animal communicator was true: Katie had come for me so that I could share incredible, unique, super-effective tools for rescue dogs and they can then live happy lives with their rescue dog lover.
It’s my passion to support rescue dogs to recover from their trauma and become well-adjusted, joyful members of the family.
Rescue dogs, like Katie, often act out their fear and anxieties in many ways like chewing, peeing, snarling, hiding, or cowering.
I’ve found some incredible ways to change these behaviors, going right to the core of their fear, anxiety and resistance, and shifting it into calm and confidence.
And it’s a fun and simple process.
It’s my love-filled gift for rescue dog lovers like you…
