Training and Techniques
Training That Is Kind, Effective and Positive
You may know of celebrity trainers and traditional methods of training, but I found some amazing training tools that are revolutionary and that go to the heart of training: getting a rescue dog’s cells to literally light up in a new way, have neurons firing in new patterns and the entire nervous system re-patterned to move from fear to happy.
Be sure to check out: Tellington Touch Training™ which seems like massage or gentle touches but it is way more than that. The cellular activation and the brains ability to take in new information is literally ground breaking. It’s taught world wide, so you can find videos and local trainers who can help you to learn this simple, effective tool.
Rescue Dog Lovers courses are filled with these kinds of amazing, break-through methods.
Books That Transform Humans and Their Rescue Dogs
The Hidden Light by Lee Kemter
The Hidden Light is filled with the true stories of Lee’s amazing animals woven in to fictional story line. If you love animals and sense they can transform you, then it’s time for you to meet the animals and the world of the hidden light.
Here’s what one of the Amazon 5 Star Reviews says: “This book will inspire anyone on the journey through difficult outer and inner landscapes and shows how healing flows naturally when we experience our connectedness to the often hidden unity, light, intelligence and benevolence.”
Written with young people in mind, the animal stories in each chapter are short and meant to evoke contemplation and application into our everyday lives.
Animals know how to teach and how to love in ways that are way beyond the mind.
In ebook digital format, the book is interactive with short videos, audio and images throughout.
For True Soul-To-Soul Communication…
Hey! Can You Hear Us? Messages From Animals by Myra Logan.
If this book does not open your heart and mind to animal communication, nothing will! I have experienced Myra’s work personally and she is the real deal.
Once I started reading her book, I could not put it down.
Myra could not possibly have known in advance the information that the animals revealed with clarity and compassion for the humans in their life.
And like my personal work with her, each animal had something important to tell their human companion…and often that conversation is a life-changing dialogue.
It’s a must read for all rescue dog owners.
So Much To Learn About Our Beloved Dogs …
“Getting in TTouch with Your Dog: A Gentle Approach to Influencing Behavior, Health, and Performance” by Linda Tellington-Jones
What readers are saying about Linda’s new book for dogs:
“Part of the brilliance of Linda’s work is the the touch she teaches and the exercise allows us to be affectionate with our dogs while teaching them something. ”
“Dogs love to engage with us as partners and this work is the key for anyone who wants to bond with their dog or heal old patterning and behaviors.
And there are lots of photos which helps me as a visual learner.”
Here are some other fabulous books that I highly recommend:
“The Genius of Dogs” by Brian Hare and Vanessa Woods
“How Dogs Love Us” by Gregory Berns
“Animals Make Us Human” by Temple Grandin
“If Bones Would Rain From The Sky” by Suzanne Clothier
“Devoted” by Rebecca Ascher-Walsh
“The Divinity of Dogs” by Jennifer Skiff
“Dog Sense” by John Bradshaw
“The Other End of the Leash” by Patricia McConnell
Behavior and Issues
Behavior That Makes Everybody Happy
For leash training, a new way to let dogs explore the world around them while learning how to stay connected with you happens through the BAT Training method: Behavior Adjustment Training.
It was developed for dogs who experience fear, frustration and aggression. I cannot image in doing this without a BAT trainer, but for leash walking with a confident, happy, reliable dog, this may be your ticket to success.
I love using a harness when working with a resuce dog for balance and because method’s used by trainers like Lori Stevens of TTouch Seattle create a true connection with the dog, shift behaviors and make the whole process of leash walking safe and fun for dogs and the humans they love.
For shifting behaviors, Rescue Dog Lovers offers immediate helpful tips and courses.
Wellness and Nutrition
Wellness and Nutrition For Discriminating Rescue Dog Lovers
It’s hard to talk about wellness without mentioning nutrition.
Here are 3 sites where I have found eco-friendly products, including, bedding and food that are natural and high quality:
where you can find brands like Stella and Chewys that are in demand these days by picky rescue dog lovers.
If you have smaller dogs, Only Natural Pet has a kibble that is the size of a green pea so it works for the small or larger breeds. Because it is small and seems to have a fabulous smell, I use it with my 60 LB fur baby as a training-treat.
One note about Stella and Chewys is that they have a way to treat their raw foods to inhibit bacteria growth so it is safe for our pets. I lean in their direction and use freeze dried raw food as a topper for my dog’s kibble.
Katie is now eating Darwins’ Natural Pets raw food with Cheweys’ freeze-dried toppers and Only Natural Pets kibble in her favorite toy (which is StarMark’s Bob-A-Lot).
And check out Dr. Harvey’s for some special treats (like liver and tripe- smelly and doggie delicious!) and carefully prepared foods.
For the more subtle forms of healing, a network has been set up to do online free energy healing such as Reiki. Access their all-volunteer healing system here: The Distance Healing Network
Over the years I have heard so many raves about a special food safety advocate for our pets, Susan Thixton. Her annual Trusted Pet Foods List is well worth getting. She does research that is in-depth and much-needed and stays on top of brands globally based on quality of ingredients, country of origin, and customer service.
It would be impossible for me to talk about wellness without telling you about the Erchonia laser. Although there are lots of lasers and lots of claims, I had the opportunity to witness miraculous results with the Erchonia laser.
I found out that from a quantum physics perspective, it is the only laser that can deliver a frequency to each organ and system in the body, consistently and with a predictable frequency. That is imperative because the laser’s job is to deliver the frequency of the heart, for example, so that they body can remember how the heart should function at its natural frequency.
When my rescue dog, Katie went to the veterinarian to be spayed, she was terrified and within a few minutes the laser calmed her. After her surgery, I asked Myra Logan, an animal communicator, to ask Katie how she was feeling and if she needed anything. Katie said she was sore and she wanted the red lights again. So the veterinarian lasered Katie both for calming and for pain and inflammation.
My mother’s cat told Myra Logan (the animal communicator who I mentioned above) that after the laser treatment, he felt a calm energy for many hours. At 17 years old, he and his littermate, Millie, loved the laser for arthritis and other issues with elderly animals.
Lifestyle and Play
Lifestyle and Play That Makes Dogs and People Smile
It’s great to be able to travel with our dogs and not every hotel and B&B loves dogs. Of course, if you are in Carmel, who would not want to be pampered by Doris Day’s incredible inn where dogs are actually a priority.
There are some super-helpful sites like http://www.bringfido.com that even have apps you can get for your smart phone.
Most of us want to help the planet while helping our dogs. Muttropolis is stepping up in the eco-friendly side of dog accessories and lifestyle products for your dog.
How about a Dog Walker App: Request a dog walker any time by using this new App: http://www.zingypet.com. The walkers are bonded and insured, background checked, trained and you can track the route they take on your phone. I have not been able to use this App since I live in the country. so please report in and give us a review if you find this App helpful.
Playful Rescue Dogs Need Safe, Eco-Friendly Toys, Bedding And Equipment
For smaller dogs, there is a made-in-the-USA company, West Paw Design, who hand crafts soft toys makes sure their products are safe and eco-friendly. Better for smaller dongs.
And for big dogs and dogs who LOVE to chew like crazy, check out the Orbee-Tuff balls: They are recyclable and non-toxic.
Katie was afraid of toys, even King Wobblers and other balls that my other dogs loved.
I found StarMark Bob-A-Lot and she loves it! And then I tried more and more balls and she likes the StarMark chewable treat ball, which got great reviews on Amazon. I’ll share with you 10 Safe Dog Toys That Keep Rescue Dogs Busy And Happy.
If you are inclined to DIY treats and toys or you want a family project so the kids can be part of the doggie fun, check this out. http://blog.honest.com/make-your-own-eco-friendly-pet-products/
For very cool collars, look no further than Etsy.com. A new wave of hemp collars has emerged. They are eco-friendly, dry quickly, won’t mold or stain. And they get softer over time. My dog is outside most of the time since she had never been indoors so I needed a strong collar that she would find comfortable. It’s been a hit since I first introduced her to it.
Some dogs need organic bedding due to health issues such as skin, immune problems, and allergies. Checkout sites like Olive Green Dog or Organic Pet Boutique. And don’t forget etsy.com for plenty of custom options from artisans from around the world.
Where To Begin With Puppy Care?
Whether you decide to go for puppy kindergarten/preschool, puppy training classes, specialized puppy clicker training, or need help with knowing what foods, treats, toys and wellness products are safe and healthy for your puppy, you can start by checking out the resources above.
It’s no secret that puppies need to be socialized around other dogs and people when they are young pups.
So try to find a puppy kindergarten/puppy preschool class where the focus is on puppy socialization for younger puppies rather than focusing totally on teaching a lot of behaviors.
Click Here to download Rescu Dog Lovers™ free “Rescue Puppy Class Check List” to screen the “school teachers” for your rescue pup.
You definitely want to study and learn positive reinforcement, whether or not the teacher is using a clicker.
Keep in mind that some trainers rely heavily on treats and really savvy ones also use toys, games and petting…whatever your puppy values most.
In the Resources above on this page, you’ll find Only Natural Pet, Chewys and other companies who sell high quality, safe, non-toxic foods, toys and doggie supplies.
Check them out for “all-things” puppy and CLICK HERE to learn about a special new online course for puppies.
